Orchard Farm, Kent
Innovative self-build housing in the UK
CHA is working with Dutch self-build developer Steenvlinder and UK company Urbanise on an innovative new scheme for self-build housing on a beautiful site near Ashford in Kent.
The project offers a unique opportunity for people to be part of a new, green community where residents can build their own house within a landscaped and carefully managed masterplan.
CHA have developed two economical, adaptable and characterful house ‘types’ for the development, each of which responds to key design parameters set out in the masterplan including local character and plot ratios. The two house types draw on our knowledge of the Kentish context with designs which can form a starting point for conversations with clients, who can then make further bespoke amendments .
The project provides an unusual model for housing in the UK and has significant potential to reinvigorate the current moribund market which offers prospective buyers little choice. Orchard Farm allows for greater individual choice in style, size, arrangement and character, whilst also helping to create a vibrant new rural community.
