Porter’s Lodge

A new entrance for a Cambridge College

This design for Homerton, the University of Cambridge’s newest college, provides a distinctive new entrance building along with all the facilities associated with the traditional porter’s lodge.

The bold tower-like form emphatically establishes the college’s presence on a fragmented suburban street close to the centre of town. It also links the college to a rich history of characterful university buildings across Cambridge.

The entrance and reception area leads to a new planted court and a colonnade that directs students, tutors and visitors to the heart of the college campus. Meeting rooms, staff facilities and a workshop and exhibition space are all accessed from the colonnade in a contemporary re-working of a historic building type.
